not sure if they use one address to receive the ransom only. If so,
you can check the address if others have paid.

yeah it uses bitcoin so i guess you can see the transactions.

I can't count anymore how many emails of this kind i have gotten
=) The best defence is using your brain.

unfortunately there are some people that fall for this shit.
at times they appeared to be intelligent people.

One thing about Gmail is that it has a sort of smart email filter that can detect spam. Most of the time, I don't even see emails like this anymore,

I also like this... but had to turn it off the other day since GMail has decided to impose their AI experiments on their user base. Fuck Google. After 20+ years of gmail, I guess I need to start using my Proton address...

i wonder if they even get money from people doing this shit.
i like using aliases so i see what sites get compromised.

Yes, they do get a profit. If you monitor their wallet address you can often see money getting dumped into it.

Scammers suck and deserve to die, but people who falls for this also suck and deserve to die. Nothing to see here.

I am an email service administrator and end users rarely get these either on my systems. It is not like Google has a monopoly on smap filtering. I still get to read a lot of spam that is sent to quarantine and it is a source for giggles.

Some of these motherfuckers are actually quite good, on the other hand. Carpet bombing like wank-blackmail is lame, but some targetted attacks are impressive these days.

True, though I've hoped it's only trained on the emails that people have marked as spam, rather than using all your data. :)

You can bet their filtering goes throughout all of your data.

Heck, my own spam filters get trained on both data marked as spam and on good data.

Can you be more specific? I've used Gmail for at least 20 years and have been nothing but satisfied with it's performance. I've experienced nothing that would imply Google's doing anything nefarious.

Using customer emails to train it's AI engine...

It has been reported in several places (like Newsweek) and of course Google is denying it.

So I guess it depends on who you want to believe. Me? I don't trust anyone these days...
